The categories in which butchers could enter ranged from sausages, burgers and bacon to pies, ready meals, offal based products and black pudding. Every product which achieved a category champion status was then pitched against each other these included:

Four products from the regional high fliers Greens of Pangbourne which were a Traditional Pork Sausage, a Pork Sizzler, Stuffed Pork Cutlets and an Old English  Pork Burger. Also in the group were two from  Uptons of Bassett another regular high achiever with a Traditional Pork Pie and a Pork & Marmite Sausage from their  Young Sausage Maker. The judges said this was ‘one of the best they had tasted in a very long while’, and also commented on how well it was produced.

Judging at AHDB Pork Awards, Newbury May 22 .jpegThe Pork Awards events are held for butchers to get their home made pork products evaluated by a team of seasoned and well-respected judges. They are either past butchers and well known in the industry or from the esteemed team of ladies from Lips (Ladies in Pigs). The products are all evaluated against a set of criteria which includes, raw appearance, taste, texture, smell, production method, size consistency, filling, shrinkage and how appealing the overall finished cooked product looks. The results provide butchers with a bench mark for their products and also the opportunity to receive feed back from the judges. A key part of the event is that the evaluations help with the continual improvement of pork products on offer from independent butchers.
